Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA)

The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, SIDA, is Sweden’s government agency for development cooperation. They strive to reduce world poverty by allocating resources and knowledge with the goal of making a difference for people in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America. To achieve this, they collaborate with actors from civil society and universities as well as the public and private sector. SIDA’s activities are funded through Swedish tax revenue. SIDA’s interest in the management of the OKAVANGO Basin has been very visible over the recent three decades. Notable programmes include SIDA provision of strategic support for the ground-breaking five-year project to guide the initiation of OKACOM programmes and governance systems. At a more local level the “Every River Has its People” project implemented through the SIDA support brought light to the need for community engagement on the management of the Okavango River Basin.
